That really depends on the individual student. Some may be more prepared than others, but colleges do their best to place students in appropriate classes, based on high school GPA and/or placement test results. Some students may need to start off in remedial courses without credit before moving on to regular credit classes. (In fact, remedial coursework is common even at public and private institutions without open enrollment policies.)
In the early part of your junior year you will take the PSAT. Use it to assess your weaknesses in any of the three major skills areas: math, reading and writing. College Board provides sample tests, study resources and an extensive library of further college planning tools. Use the same site to study for your SAT. Many students buy study guides that bundle lists of traditional SAT vocabulary words and offer insightful ways to remember and recall tricky math rules, theorems, functions and calculations. If your region subscribes to the ACT exam you can access similar resources through guidebooks or the ACT website.

Fill in the academic requirements. This area will include your testing scores and your transcripts and information from other schools. You'll need to know things like your high school grade point average (GPA). They may also have questions about any CLEP or AP tests you've taken that give you college credit, as well as any credits you'll want to transfer from other schools.[15]

However, tuition rates, fees, and associated expenses are a chief concern for many students. Degree seekers should thoroughly research each school they are considering in order to determine which options are most affordable. Tuition is usually the most substantial expense, but students also need to cover other educational costs. Below you'll find a detailed breakdown of different fees and expected costs for online students.

In lieu of motivated parents, students committed to college must engage education specialists early in their education. All other college-bound students are advised to do the same. School guidance, career and academic counselors are highly trained to provide direction for students, and to offer all the available options for a college career. Counselors can provide guidance to students lost in a quagmire of career indecision and, based on personality tests, may also make suggestions for type of college or university environment most suited to the student. In the section on “Kinds of Colleges” I explore the differences between the types of institutions and emphasize the distinguishing features that might be a pro or con based on student personality types and academic goals.

Open admissions, or open enrollment, is an inclusive college entrance policy that accepts any student who has a high school diploma or equivalent certificate. Online college admission requirements for schools that participate in open admissions differ from selective universities. Typically, open enrollment colleges require no college entrance exam, such as the ACT or SAT. Instead, these schools require students to take academic assessments or placement tests. Students who completed a college entrance exam are usually not required to take a placement test. ACT or SAT scores determine course placement.

Usually your sophomore year of high school turns to talk of college and entrance exams. At this stage you should create a timeline or dated to-do list. Add big items such as PSAT, SAT, college visits, fill out applications, and file your FAFSA. As time goes on refer back to this list/timeline and continue to fill in dates and tasks as they come up. For example you might find applicable scholarships; each will have an application deadline. Deadlines for grants and state-funded programs should populate the list as well. When you have your list complete to the best of your knowledge, review it with both parents and guidance counselor.

"For a four-year school that's open enrollment, you could have students who passed their classes with D grades and a GPA just high enough to graduate. This could be a negative for higher-achieving students who attend that same college."

Online college admission requirements emphasize inclusion, therefore, policies that rely on selective measures, such as previous academic achievement, do not exist. Students who excelled in high school and are applying to an open enrollment college have the added benefit of receiving credits for introductory courses and accelerating their degree. Although a minimum GPA is usually not required for admission to an open enrollment college, students are often required to maintain a minimum college GPA once admitted. For example, some schools may require students to earn a minimum 1.75 GPA to graduate. Typically, students must earn a 2.0 GPA or better in their major to receive their degree.

Using criteria such as standardized test scores, prior GPA, recommendation letters, and character assessment, competitive admissions enables schools to be selective in assembling their student body, as well as practice quality control. Online classes demand a high level of peer interaction as part of the learning process, so accepting students with proven academic ability makes it more likely that the school can provide a better experience for everyone in the virtual classroom.

Students must attend fully accredited schools in order to qualify for federal loans. Accreditation status should be prominently displayed somewhere on the school's home page. Additionally, the U.S. Department of Education and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation each maintain full lists of all accredited schools in the U.S. These lists allow students to browse all options and find cheap accredited online colleges.

In rates of college enrollment, wealthy students have long outpaced their lower-income peers. But the gap is narrowing. In 1986, 73% of top-quintile high school graduates went on to college, compared to 37% of bottom-quintile graduates. That made for an “enrollment gap” between rich and poor students of 36 percentage points. But as of 2016, the gap has narrowed to just 16 percentage points.
Once you have narrowed down your college search a critical component in your application process should be a campus visit. College is as much marketing as it is academics and finances, so your slick, glossy brochure is designed to sell. Like everything else in sales, sometimes things ain’t as they appear to be. Would you spend $50,000 on a car sight unseen? Then why would you make your choice of college without paying a visit?

So by selecting a tuition plan, it signifies that you are ready to begin taking courses. To select a plan, you can go through your Online Student Services account or call the Office of the Bursar at (609) 984-4099. You will then be enrolled for 12 months from the date you chose that tuition plan. Of course, you aren’t locked into that option forever. If in the following year you plan to take significantly less, or more, credits, you can enroll in the other tuition plan. If you’re ready to enroll and still have questions, Enrolled Services can assist by calling (888) 442-8372 Option 1 or emailing enrolled@tesu.edu.

Kobzina suggests looking into why the school is open enrollment and learning some key statistics, such as the retention rate for first-year students and career placement after graduation. Schools that score low on these indicators may not have the resources to help students succeed. "A college education isn't cheap, so knowing that you'll be successful after graduation is important," he says.
